What is BerksCal?

The Berks County Public Events Calendar - BerksCal for short - is a website built by Scott Williams of Cotts, Inc. and Daniel Smith of Kutztown University to gather, inform, and share Berks County events. BerksCal is perfect for discovering what is happening in Berks County, planning a big event, or for exploring the county. It even gives everyone event details not found on other websites.

BerksCal will always be free for the public, organizations, and event organizers. We support the cost to provide this service through sponsorships, ads, and the great Berks County citizens who donate to the site. Anyone can use BerksCal to share, see, and plan events for the county.

Who works at BerksCal?

In addition to Scott Williams and the brilliant minds at Cotts Inc., BerksCal's blog posts are written by Daniel Smith:

Daniel "Fedora Dan" Smith

If it's read, he wrote it. Daniel Smith, better known as "Fedora Dan" on his blog FestForschers, is BerksCal's blog writer. Daniel is a Chester County native and a Kutztown University student, studying for a communication major and minors in public relations and professional writing. His passion is in writing; Daniel has been writing since 2011, and currently creates blog posts on Berks County for FestForschers and BerksCal. Daniel is also involved in Berks County organizations, attends local events, rides county railways like the Allentown & Auburn R.R., and loves every second of Berks County.

How did BerksCal Start?

BerksCal is the latest evolution in a duo's quest to help Berks County. Scott and Daniel didn't always know each other; roughly 30 miles and two different lifestyles separated them. Scott began with an experimental (now successful) website called Skoocal, while Daniel began with a WordPress website called FestForschers.

Cott's Inc. illuminates Schuylkill County's event community. The digital media company helps hundreds of clients advertise their businesses. But these events often conflict; they happen at the same time in distant locations. When two major events for Schuylkill County started at the same time at opposite ends of the county, Scott knew a website to coordinate events was needed. With dedication and hard work, Scott created SkooCal: the Schuylkill County Public Events Calendar. Over time, Schuylkill County businesses and event organizers began to depend on SkooCal. Within a few months, SkooCal transformed the event community. It allowed them to coordinate, combine, and create massive events that attracted people from all over Pennsylvania.

With SkooCal's success, Scott set his eyes on Berks County. Cott's Inc. supplied the resources and investment, but something was missing. SkooCal was only, by this point, an events calendar. If an events calendar is able to transform a county, what would something better do for Berks? BerksCal needed a personality; a guide through Berks County showing the best places, giving personal insights of the community, and informing the world of Berks County's great events.

Fortunately, the writer for the job was roughly 30 miles away. He already blogs about Berks County events between projects as a hobby.

Kutztown University buzzes with coffee-fueled bright minds. Thousands of students work for their dreams. Dozens of them form student organizations benefiting KU and Kutztown, PA. Concerts, giveaways, games, pet therapy days, and so much more happening around the students. But they didn't know about the events. This baffles Daniel, who became a patron of the university's events. Between all-nighters and class projects, Daniel dedicated his time to FestForschers, the Berks County Festival Explorer. The blog began as humble, daily posts about university events shared on Facebook. The Allentown & Auburn R.R. began to work with Daniel in sharing local community events on the calendar. Eventually, everything organically grew around "more". More students, more businesses, and more blog posts elevated FestForschers from a Kutztown University event blog to a Kutztown, PA, event blog, and finally to a dedicated Berks County events blog.

With FestForschers success, however, Daniel sacrificed more of his time to maintain the site. The joy it created for Berks County motivated him to work. But a college student with a free website could only do so much. While the personality, guide, and passion for Berks County events let FestForschers bloom, it would take resources and investment to really help the community.

The duo continues their respective dissimilarities until one day when Daniel discovered SkooCal. The format of the website delighted Daniel, who learned more about Cott's Inc. The festival explorer soon found himself exploring digital media; he poured over digital media blog posts, explored the companies history, and looked at their product offerings. A single line caught him.

"If you need hep with our digital kiosks, click here."

Daniel, wanting to help Cott's Inc., sent an email concerning the typo. The company sent it to Scott, who quickly learned about FestForschers and the writer, blogger, and motivated student who was showcasing events in Berks County.

The mutual discovery bloomed over emails, and on May 20th, 2018, Scott and Daniel created BerksCal. Like with SkooCal and FestForschers, Scott and Daniel continue to grow BerksCal while sharing events, informing others of Berks County's events, and helping the community bloom. With Scott providing the infrastructure and experience and Daniel providing the personality, BerksCal continues to grow.
